Urology Working Group at the University of Florida Launches Website

The International Evidence Based Urology (EBU) Working Group has recently launched its website at http://evidence-based.urology.ufl.edu. Established at the University of Florida in 2008, it is the first group in urology of its kind with the broad aim of promoting the evidence based clinical practice of urology through education and research. Urology-specific educational resources developed by the group include the Users’ Guide to the Urological Literature series published in the Journal of Urology and the Evidence Based Urology in Practice series published in BJU International. Ongoing projects include the development of evidence based medicine modules for resident education with support of the Society of University Program Directors and Chairpersons as well as the launch of an evidence based journal club in conjunction with the American Urological Association (AUA). Current research projects by members of the group focus on the quality of evidence and transparency of reporting in the urological literature as well as the development of clinical decision support systems and guidelines. The group strongly encourages international collaboration and exchange and welcomes new members.

Sydney-Tilburg conference on Evidence, Science and Public Policy

Jeremy Howick (an OCEBM postdoctoral research fellow) was recently invited to talk at the “Sydney-Tilburg conference on Evidence, Science, and Public Policy” (http://sydcfs.org.au/). At the conference he defended his view of how the different roles of clinical expertise should fit into a modified EBM ‘philosophy’ of evidence. He also attempted, only somewhat successfully, to follow in Paul Glasziou’s shoes and tried out surfing (see picture).

EBM is flourishing Worldwide

Paul Glasziou has just returned from teaching in Malaysia and Indonesia as part of a 3-year Asia Link program that the CEBM is undertaking in partnership with the Julies Center in Utrecht. Several of the teachers have already attended EBM workshops in Oxford and were keen to teach in these local workshops. The aim is to provide not only the clinicians with EBM skills, but also to develop a group of teachers for the medical student undergraduate programs. This fits perfectly with one of the CEBM's aims which is to develop groups around the world to run their own EBM training programs.

From left to right: Dr Mohd Haris Fadzillah bin Abdul Rahman, Prof. Dr. Sudigdo Sastroasmoro, Dr. Sheamini a/p Sivasampu, Dr Mas Ayu Said, Dr Liew Su-May, Dr Norita Hussein, Dr Sajaratulnisah Othman, Dr Claire Choo Wan Yuen, Dr Moy Foong Ming, Dr Sanjay Rampal, Puan Noormah Mohd Darus, Professor Paul Glasziou, Dr Partini Pudjiastuti Trihono, Dr Noran Naqiah Hairi,Prof Datin Chia Yook Chin, Dr Indah S Widyahening

Rafael Perera coordinates new Masters module

In December 2008 Rafael Perera ran Module 2 of the Masters for Evidence-Based Practice. The module - Introduction to study design and research methods - consists of eight weeks of both online and face to face teaching. The most intensive part of the course is the face to face meeting that took place in the second week of December. In total 22 students undertook the face to face week which included presentations, lectures, and workshops
Feedback quotes
"All were great, the session with Dr Doll was excellent and we should have (or the next year) a bit more in the various forms of sample size as this interested the class a lot."
"I think it was very well planned, the learning was in context. I have nothing to complain of!"
"Part of the stats was difficult but when placed into context some parts were a taster for the advanced stats course, and they became more relevant."
"Excellent session on qualitative research. Good (very very good) sessions by John and Derrick. I'm afraid they initially pitched their sessions a bit too high level for us, but kudos to them for responding to our learning needs and slowing down."
The objective of the module is for students to write a research protocol for developing their research ideas to either undertake a research project for the master thesis or obtain external funding, turning ideas in practice into a research project.
More information

Richard Stevens has been appointed to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) committee.
The committee approves applications to use the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) for research.
One of the few pluses of long flights is the chance to think without interruption (except nibbles and drinks). Carl Heneghan had suggested we revise the CEBM document on study types, which has had thousands of downloads. So on the 7 hour flight to a recent 3-day EBM workshop in Oman I had the chance to do exactly that. For teaching EBM, a basic understanding of the main study types is an essential early step for searching for the right research. But getting the balance of overview and details is tricky. The new document is a little larger, but we think it is much more helpful. But we would like your opinion and suggestions. So please feel free to download and pass on your comments.
Visit the new Study Designs page ...
Download Rod Jackson's 2008 Workshop Presentation ...
Download Sharon Straus' 2008 Workshop Presentation ...
