This workshop is intended to serve as an introduction to evidence-based practice. It is aimed at clinicians and other health care professionals (including those involved in the field of mental health) who wish to gain knowledge of critical appraisal and experience in the practice of evidence-based health care.
You should consider attending if you:
- have a belief in the process of small-group learning
- wish to learn how to practice EBM, and
- are committed to patient-centred learning
Workshop Aims
After the workshop, participants should be able to:
- formulate answerable questions
- search effectively for evidence
- critically appraise evidence about treatment, prognosis, diagnosis and aetiology for its validity and applicability
- understand basic measures of efficacy such as numbers needed to treat and likelihood ratios
- understand the basics of decision analysis, guidelines and cost-effectiveness analysis.
Workshop Format
Most of the Workshop will be conducted in small groups in which participants will develop and test their own EBM knowledge. Time will be provided each day for searching, study and the establishment of working groups. There will be opportunities to continue and develop working groups during informal social events.
Workshop Materials and preparation
Particpants will receive EBM packages in diagnosis, prognosis, therapy/prevention, quality of care, systematic reviews, and economic analysis. They will also receieve appropriate background readings, a relevant textbook and software tools to help them practice and teach EBM.
Workshop Facilitators
Workshop facilitators have been practicing and teaching EBM at sites across the UK, Europe, North America and Australasia. The Workshop will be chaired by Prof. Paul Glasziou, Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine and Editor of Evidence-Based Medicine. Facilitators will include experts in Evidence-Based Practice from different specialisms, including mental health.
