SSM in Evidence Based Diagnostics

The choice to carry out my final year Special Study Module (SSM) in Evidence Based Diagnosis was born of an interest in Evidence Based Medicine and my toying with the idea of a career in primary care. The SSM is well-structured, with clear and manageable goals, and well supported, with regular meetings with Dr Plüddemann to discuss progress on the project and for teaching on the fundamentals of Evidence Based Diagnostics. At the same time, the project offered an optimal level of flexibility, allowing me plenty of time to fully explore the available literature on my chosen diagnostic technology.

As well as producing a Horizon Scanning Report, to be published online on the Oxford NIHR DEC website, I gained a more thorough knowledge of statistical methods, and a more critical approach to appraising evidence in health care which I plan to take forward into my career as a clinician – I will never read a scientific paper the same way again! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my SSM, and would highly recommend it to any other final year students.
