I have been in dental education for 22 years, teaching prosthodontics (prosthetic dentistry) at The University of Texas Health Science School of Dentistry at Houston, Texas, where I hold a faculty appointment as Associate Professor. After completing my BA degree in biology in 1971, I studied in Oxford for a year as Visiting Graduate Student at St. Catherine’s College. In the following years, I received my DDS, Certificate in Prosthodontics, MS and MPH degrees. Forty years after leaving Oxford, I returned to St. Catherine’s College and I am currently reading for the MSc in Evidence-Based Health Care. For a full-time academic, the part-time MSc programme offers a fabulous and unique opportunity to pursue an Oxford degree while studying under world-class tutors in small, challenging and interactive seminars with international groups of fellow students from very diverse professional backgrounds. This experience is re-kindling my enthusiasm and invigorating my academic career in teaching and research as well as in my clinical practice.
Since I began the EBHC MSc programme, a significant portion of my time has been devoted toward teaching students and faculty in my school the principles and components of EBD. To facilitate the integration of EBD in patient treatments in the clinic, I developed a simple and novel EBD tool. It is an online EBDFlashCard for students and faculty to use chair-side in the clinic. It is posted as a single-page PDF file on our school’s website and can also be accessed by a direct link via a mobile application on an iPad or other portable devices.
The primary purpose of the EBD Flash Card is to serve as a practical and handy reference guide when in the clinic for EBD fundamentals and to facilitate a quick and accurate search for good EBD evidence via direct links to seven secondary source databases. In addition, there are links to other useful websites for tutorials, resources and other information about EBD. If anyone has a question, there is a link to contact me by email.
As I progress with my MSc studies, I will continue looking for innovative approaches and concepts to assist incorporating EBD in academic dentistry.
